Montale Perfume Collection Review: 26 Scents Tested

This weekend, I did something slightly crazy — I tested 26 Montale fragrances back-to-back. Yes, my nose needed a break afterward. But it was worth it.
Montale is one of those niche perfume houses that feels larger than life. Walk into one of their boutiques and you’re greeted by a wall of metallic bottles in every color imaginable. Oud, rose, vanilla, musk, incense — they’ve done it all. And they’ve done it loudly.
If you’ve ever been curious about Montale but felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of releases, this post is for you. Here’s what stood out, what surprised me, and what I’d personally recommend.
First Impressions: What Montale Does Best
After testing 26 scents, a few things became very clear:
-
Performance is strong. Most Montale fragrances project well and last 8+ hours.
-
They love bold notes. Oud, patchouli, vanilla, musk — nothing feels shy.
-
There’s shared DNA. You’ll notice similarities between certain fragrances.
-
Sweet scents dominate. Gourmands and amber-heavy perfumes are big here.
Montale doesn’t really do “barely there.” If you want something soft and whispery, this probably isn’t your house. But if you want presence? You’re in the right place.
The Oud Powerhouses

Montale built its reputation on oud, and several fragrances highlight that beautifully.
Black Aoud (2006)
A classic rose-oud combo, but what makes it special is the patchouli. That earthy depth gives it a sexy, slightly dirty edge. The oud is very wearable — not animalic — and it feels bold but polished.
Intense Black Aoud (2017)
Exactly what the name suggests: thicker, denser, heavier. If you love the original but want more intensity, this delivers.
Arabians (2017)
Spicy, leathery, deep. Cardamom and leather stand out, giving it a strong Middle Eastern vibe. It’s rich and dramatic — not my personal favorite, but undeniably powerful.
Bengal Oud (2019)
This one didn’t quite work for me. It leaned sour and one-dimensional. It lacked the sweetness or contrast that makes an oud fragrance exciting.
The Crowd-Pleasers & Sweet Hits
Montale truly shines when it blends sweetness with depth.
Arabians Tonka (2019)
Probably one of their most popular releases. It has that sugary, caramelized “crystal” effect — hints of chocolate, praline, amber woods, and that subtle ambroxan glow that reminds many people of Baccarat Rouge 540. Sweet, sexy, and great projection.
Sensual Instinct (2019)
Also in that amber-woody, modern sweet category. It feels like a blend of pre-loved fragrance elements: amber, musk, a touch of rose. Very wearable, very trendy.
Vanilla Cake (2018)
This is not subtle. It smells like literal cake with frosting. Milky, sugary, ultra-gourmand. If you love sweet scents, you’ll adore it. If you don’t — run.
Dark Vanilla (2020)
A more masculine, smoky take on vanilla. Less cupcake, more leather jacket. It’s sweet but grounded with woods and smokiness.
The Icon: Intense Cafe & Its Variations
If Montale has a superstar, it’s Intense Cafe (2013).
Intense Cafe
Despite the name, it’s not strong espresso. The coffee is more of a warm, creamy impression. The real stars are rose, amber, musk, and that soft milky note. It’s cozy, romantic, and incredibly addictive. This remains one of my absolute favorites.
Ristretto Intense Cafe (2019)
Same DNA, but drier and more coffee-forward. The rose is still there, but the espresso note feels stronger and less creamy. If you wanted more “cafe” in Intense Cafe, this is your version.
Roses Musk (2009)
If you love the rose in Intense Cafe, this is worth trying. It strips away the creaminess and focuses on rose and musk. Clean, long-lasting, elegant.
The Gourmand & Sweet Experiments

Montale has some truly edible-feeling fragrances.
Chocolate Greedy
Smells exactly like Nutella on toast. When I first tried it years ago, it overwhelmed me. Now I appreciate it more — but it’s very literal chocolate.
Patchouli Leaves (2006)
Chocolatey patchouli with resin and vanilla. It smells like dark chocolate cake with earthy depth underneath. Delicious.
Honey Aoud (2015)
Strong cinnamon, noticeable oud. Less syrupy than expected. If you like spicy-sweet with a woody backbone, this is solid.
Fresh & Green Options
Not everything is heavy and sweet. There are some fresher styles too.
Red Vetiver (2008)
Think Terre d’Hermès but more intense and slightly powdery. Mineral, spicy, and clean with presence.
Vetiver Patchouli (2019)
Green, aromatic, earthy. Reminds me of Diptyque Tempo or Louis Vuitton Orage but richer and deeper.
Fougeres Marines (2007)
Marine freshness mixed with herbs. Light, breezy, and easy to wear — though not as bold as many others in the line.
The Incense & Resin Lovers

Full Incense (2010)
If you think incense scents are boring, try this. It’s smoky, resinous, slightly sweet, and powerful. It has a dramatic presence without feeling churchy or dusty.
Oud Tobacco (2020)
Interesting idea — featuring sumac for a tangy spice twist — but the tobacco wasn’t as prominent as I hoped. Not bad, just less exciting.
The Surprises
Oud Lavender (2015)
Lavender and oud sounds risky, but it works. It feels like a fougère with an exotic twist. A bit earthy, slightly damp, but balanced by aromatic freshness.
Dallachai (2024)
One of the newer releases. Spicy chai tea vibes with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and creamy undertones. On skin, it becomes smoother — like a chai latte rather than dry spices.
Oudmazing (2016)
Fruity, sexy, and slightly reminiscent of mainstream patchouli-fruity perfumes. It has fig, patchouli, and oud blended in a very approachable way.
What I Noticed About Montale Overall

After 26 fragrances, I started noticing repetition in certain notes and structures. It feels like Montale sometimes works in modules — similar rose accords, similar amber woods, similar sweet bases.
That’s not necessarily bad. If you find one you love, there’s likely another variation you’ll enjoy too.
Also worth mentioning: Montale has become much more accessible. You can now find them at major retailers, and they offer smaller 20ml bottles — which I highly recommend before committing to a full 100ml.
My Personal Top Picks
If I had to narrow it down:
-
Intense Cafe – Creamy rose perfection.
-
Ristretto Intense Cafe – Deeper, sexier variation.
-
Arabians Tonka – Sweet, bold, addictive.
-
Black Aoud – Classic rose-oud done right.
-
Patchouli Leaves – Chocolate lovers’ dream.
Final Thoughts

Montale is bold. Loud. Unapologetic. And sometimes repetitive. But when they get it right, they really get it right.
If you love strong projection, rich sweetness, oud, rose, and gourmand fragrances, this house is absolutely worth exploring. If you prefer airy minimalism, it might feel overwhelming.
For me, Montale will always hold a special place — especially for Intense Cafe, which still makes me smile every time I wear it.
Have you tried Montale? I’d love to know your favorites.
